United youngster hoping to emulate Rashford’s rise

Manchester United youngster Scott McTominay is aiming to gain a regular first team place and join the likes of Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard as academy graduates in Mourinho’s team.

Similar to Rashford, the midfielder was fairly unknown across the Manchester United fan base, but has risen through the ranks at Old Trafford in order to make his first-team debut at the age of 20.

The youngster came off the bench against Arsenal last season, and started United’s final game of the Premier League season against Crystal Palace. The versatile midfielder was then drafted into Mourinho’s pre-season squad for the side’s tour of USA, where he made several appearances and also registered his first ever goal for the club.

The prospect is now in contention to play against Championship side Burton Albion in the League Cup, and says he hopes to emulate the success of Rashford and Lingard at the club. Manchester United vs Burton Albion betting odds can be found here.

“It’s crazy when you think back all those years to when you’re five years old going to the development centre, and then going all the way through the ranks,” said McTominay.

“It honestly is a dream come true for me to be playing in the first team, and playing against teams like Real Madrid.”

“But obviously you just want more and more of that and that is the main thing for my career: to be playing in big games, in competitive games and just do my best and hopefully see where it takes me.”

McTominay was also full of praise for manager Jose Mourinho, but remained tight lipped over what advice the Portuguese gives him.

“Things he does say stay between me and the manager but a lot of it is help and advice, really,” he added.

“It’s all like when we go out on the pitch, what I can do better, things that I can improve on and he is brilliant for that with young players.”

“He’s top – he’s perfect for a manager and that’s why he is manager of Man Utd. He’s a really good guy.”

United will hope McTominay can provide extra cover for injured Paul Pogba, who faces weeks on the sidelines with a hamstring injury that he suffered against Basel last week.
