Paul Pogba out for weeks with hamstring injury

Jose Mourinho says midfielder Paul Pogba could be out for ‘weeks’ after pulling up with a suspected hamstring injury whilst playing for Manchester United in the Champions League.

The 24-year-old skippered United on the night, and lasted just 18 minutes before limping off holding his hamstring. He was then reportedly seen leaving Old Trafford on crutches.

United strolled to victory in the game, beating Swiss side Basel 3-0 after goals from Fellaini, Lukaku and Rashford. But the result was slightly marred by the injury to Pogba, which will be a huge blow to the club after the Frenchman had started the season so brightly.

The extent of Pogba’s injury remains unknown, but Jose Mourinho says from experience he believes the star will be out for a number of weeks.

“I don’t know (what the severity is),” Mourinho told MUTV. “I just know from experience it’s a muscular injury.”

“In my experience, muscular injury stops you from playing for a few weeks, I think. It looks for me too (like a hamstring injury) but I haven’t spoken yet to the medical department.”

“Squads are for this, squads are for injuries, squads are for suspensions. We don’t cry with injuries. So if no Paul for Sunday, we have (Ander) Herrera, we have (Michael) Carrick, we have Fellaini and we have (Nemanja) Matic.”

The injury to Pogba is a frustrating one to all involved. He has been one of many bright sparks in the squad so far this season, scoring two goals in his opening two games for the club – as well as performing to an above average level in general.

Pogba will be bitterly disappointed that his first game in the Champions League with United ended in under 20 minutes, but let’s hope the Frenchman will return fighting fit once again in as little time as possible.
