Chiesa V Coman: Who Would Be The Better Signing For United If Sancho Deal Collapses?

The gamesmanship between Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund over the transfer of Jadon Sancho reached new heights yesterday when the Bundesliga club issued a statement to confirm there had been no talks with the Red Devils about signing the England international.

It is thought that both teams have dug themselves in over the winger’s price tag, with Dortmund insisting their €120m (£108m) valuation must be met while United are refusing to match it.

The situation could change quickly, of course, but at the time of writing it is looking less likely that Sancho will be moving to Old Trafford this summer.

Fiorentina’s Federico Chiesa and Bayern Munich’s Kingsley Coman have been touted as two possible alternatives. Press the next page as we look at which of them would be the better signing for United.

Dribbling

In the Bundesliga last season, Coman had 2.4 successful dribbles per game compared to Chiesa’s 1.5. However, it must be pointed that while the Frenchman does generally pick up the ball and run with it more often than his Italian counterpart, both have roughly the same success percentage for keeping possession (around 60%).

As we will see later on in this piece, Coman is very much a traditional winger, while Chiesa, in contrast, has more in common with an inside forward.

Crossing

In terms of deliveries into the box, Coman also wins on this metric, averaging twice as many crosses as Chiesa in their respective leagues this season.

The France international also has a slightly better completion percentage (20%) than the Italian forward (17%), which shows he isn’t just aimlessly whipping balls into the area.

Goals

This is where Chiesa very much comes out on top. The 22-year-old scored ten goals in Serie A last campaign, averaging a goal every 265 minutes. Coman, meanwhile, only managed four in the Bundesliga, averaging a strike every 378 minutes.

Chiesa is simply more of a goal threat, with the Fiorentina winger also unleashing twice as many shots per match compared to his Bayern Munich counterpart.

Assists

Despite Coman’s crossing accuracy, Chiesa actually had more assists last season (6) than the German (3) in the league. There isn’t actually a metric that explains why this is the case.

Both averaged a similar number of key passes, while the number of big chances created is almost identical. In another campaign perhaps, the figures would have been level.

In terms of the stats, you would have to say that Coman, despite scoring fewer goals would be the better signing, although it must be said, that both players are downgrades on Sancho.
