TOP FIVE Most Capped Players At The 2022 World Cup

Following our look at the best paid players in England’s World Cup squad last time, we have decided to profile some of the elder statesmen at the tournament this week.

While it was rare for players to reach 100 caps fifteen to twenty years ago, the extended careers of footballers these days mean there are plenty that reach that landmark now.

However, in today’s list, we will at looking at some World Cup stars who have been capped 150 or more times for their countries.

Press the next page as we go through the most capped players at the 2022 World Cup.

=4) Celso Borges (Costa Rica) – 156 Caps

The midfielder is actually playing at his third World Cup, after also playing an important role in qualifying for the previous tournaments in Brazil and Russia.

Borges has had spells in Sweden, Turkey and Spain but he returned to Costa Rica last year to play for Alajuelense. He did start the first group game of the 2022 World Cup, but he was substituted with 20 minutes to go in the 7-0 defeat to Spain.

=4) Luka Modric (Croatia) – 156 Caps

The former Ballon d’Or winner reached the final with Croatia four years ago, but he is now 37 years of age and it remains to be seen how long he can continue to play at the highest level. The tournament in Qatar is almost certainly his last World Cup.

Modric’s trophy-laden career has seen him lift multiple league titles and cups as well as an unprecedented FIVE Champions Leagues.

3) Lionel Messi (Argentina) – 166 Caps

The World Cup is the only trophy that the Argentinian legend hasn’t won in his extraordinary career and the task to reach the final has got all the harder after the defeat to Saudi Arabia.

With group games against Mexico and Poland coming up, Messi’s country will need him to produce some magic to get them out of the hole they have dug for themselves.

2) Hassan Al-Haydos (Qatar) – 170 Caps

This year’s hosts have the second-highest-capped player at the tournament in their ranks. He has played for Al-Sadd in his homeland throughout his entire professional career.

At 31, Al-Haydos is likely to break the 200 cap barrier at some point, but his most immediate concern will be helping Qatar improve following their defeat to Ecuador in their World Cup opener.

1) Andres Guardado (Mexico) – 178 Caps

The 36-year-old hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down. For his club side, Real Betis, he is a regular starter, while he remains a key player for his country.

Guardado exclusively plays as a central midfielder these days but he has been deployed in multiple different positions, including as a winger, wingback and auxiliary striker.
