Rashford opens up on United and England sub bench frustration

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has insisted he has no issue with not starting every game for the club, as long as it doesn’t effect his development.

Rashford was regularly used as a substitute for United last season, with Jose Mourinho preferring to use him as an impact player off the bench and trusting more experienced players in the squad to start.

It had been widely reported that the England international was unhappy with his role at United, and that he could potentially seek a move away from Old Trafford in search of game time.

However, Rashford has openly admitted he can take positives from spending time on the bench, but warns it would become an issue if it effected his development as a player.

“Every player will tell you it’s always frustrating when you don’t start. You have to look at the positives – you get two extra days’ training,” he said.

“It’s not stopped me developing. If it had stopped me developing then it’s more of a problem.

“He (Mourinho) has 20-25 players. Everyone has different attributes and suits different styles so finding the right balance is a tough job for a manager.

“He got it right most of the time last season but we need a bit extra to push for the title.”

Rashford has also found his England game time limited at this summer’s World Cup, with Raheem Sterling ahead of him in the pecking order under Gareth Southgate.

But the 20-year-old is remaining patient and hopes to dislodge the City star when his chance comes.

“You’ve got to be patient,’ he said.

“You have to have an open mind because there are a lot of top players that all bring different qualities to the game.

“And at the level we’re playing at here, being in an England camp or whether it is at the club, you have to really understand that.”
