Sporting Lisbon head coach Ruben Amorim has played down reports linking him with the Manchester United job.

The 39-year-old, who has recently won the Liga Portugal title with Sporting, was asked about his thoughts on replacing Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford and he replied:

“The same as always. We can’t control what happens in the future, but I’m very focused on Sporting, on the job. The mistakes I’ve made in the past I won’t make in the future. You don’t even know if you’ll continue in your jobs if you might get an offer. My focus is on Sporting and we’re preparing for next season. It’s rumours.”

When speaking about whether he would consider leaving Sporting, Amorim said that the circumstances would have to be right:

“The quality of the team and the players also helps. I certainly won’t be catching another plane to England (laughs). I’m Sporting’s coach and I don’t focus on rumours.”

Amorim was referring to the incident last month when he travelled to the UK for talks with West Ham. He has also been linked with Chelsea and Liverpool in recent weeks.

Is ten Hag’s position under threat at United?

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS are expected to make a final decision on the Dutchman’s future at the end of the season. With there now being a possibility that the Red Devils could miss out on playing in Europe entirely next campaign, ten Hag is under huge pressure.

Beating Manchester City in the FA Cup final later this month could potentially save his job but there are those who feel that a parting of ways could happen no matter the result.

Is Amorim among the favourites for the United job?

Bookmakers have priced the Portuguese coach between 12/1 and 20/1 so he is not a rank outsider but he isn’t one of the leading contenders either.

Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel is currently the favourite, followed by Gareth Southgate, Graham Potter and Roberto De Zerbi.
