Premier League Legend Urges Manchester United To Hand Key Player New Contract

Former Premier League all-star Kaspar Schmeichel has called for Manchester United to give a new contract to superstar shot-stopper David De Gea on Sky Sports Monday Night Football.

In the interview, Schmeichel said: “Not just an incredible goalkeeper, an incredible servant to the club – what is it, 11 or 12 years he’s been at the club? To be at any club for that long, I know is a difficult thing.

“To be the number one at a football club the size of Manchester United is an incredible achievement and one that has to be really respected. I think, looking at his season, [De Gea has] been asked to play a completely different way to how he’s ever had to play.

“I think he’s playing at a really high level with his feet as well. The actual goalkeeping side of it has never been in question, because he is outrageous how good he is at that.

“I think Manchester United are looking at it in terms of what would it cost to replace him? It would cost you north of £60 million and you already have a guy who is a top-class goalkeeper and from the looks of it wants to stay, so I think they’ll reach some kind of agreement at some point.”

Kaspar Schmeichel is the son of Peter Schmeichel, who played for Manchester United between the years of 1991 and 1999. While Kaspar has never played for the Red Devils, he enjoyed a lengthy spell at Leicester City, in which he won the Premier League trophy during their famous 2015/16 season.

De Gea’s contract is set to expire in the summer of 2023. While there is a clause in his contract that will allow United to extend it for a further year, they have yet to exercise it.
