Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted after the penalty shootout defeat to Villarreal last night that his side performed well below their best.
The Norwegian, however, singled out midfielder Scott McTominay for praise, with the Scottish international putting in an industrious display in the middle of the park. Most supporters on Twitter agree with that assessment:
Best? I'd say only player on the pitch. No one else turned up.

United clearly had the better players out on the pitch, but there are big question marks over the mentality of the squad, and whether they are a team who are hungry enough to win titles.
With the exception of McTominay, and perhaps Edinson Cavani, the big-name stars simply failed to turn up and produce their best. There will be a lot of soul-searching in the coming months after another year without any trophies to show for it.
Not only the players, but Solskjaer himself will come under scrutiny, and it will be interesting to see what changes are made over the summer.
