Peter Schmeichel Says Former Chelsea Boss “Should Be” In Contention To Replace Ten Hag At United

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel believes Bayern Munich head coach Thomas Tuchel “should be” considered by INEOS if they decide to sack Erik ten Hag this summer.

Tuchel will be leaving Bayern at the end of the season so the former Chelsea manager will be available and, when asked whether Tuchel would be suitable for the job at Old Trafford, Schmeichel replied:

“If Manchester United were in the market for a manager then he should be somebody mentioned in that respect. He should be. He has that kind of pedigree, he’s got the authority, he’s proven he can win which I think is really important.”

“He doesn’t come with a set system, ‘this is how our football is being played’… Yeah, of course [he should be considered], he’s a big club manager, isn’t he?”

Who is the favourite to replace ten Hag at the bookies?

Tuchel is actually the frontrunner to be the next Manchester United manager at Sky Bet currently (2/1), although other bookmakers have seen more backing for England boss Gareth Southgate and Tuchel’s successor at Chelsea: Graham Potter.

In terms of other names who could be in the frame, Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi and former Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane have been mentioned, but both have seen their odds lengthen in recent weeks.

What has ten Hag had to say about his future at United?

The Dutchman has previously said that he is “very aligned” with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and what INEOS are bringing to the table but he has become increasingly defensive in press conferences about his team’s performances and results.

Ten Hag was especially unhappy with the criticism his side received after beating Coventry City in the FA Cup semi-final earlier this month, subsequently banning a number of journalists from asking questions for writing negative articles.

After the 1-1 draw against Burnley at the weekend, the Dutchman insisted that his side are one of the “most dynamic and entertaining teams in the league”, but many fans and pundits would disagree with that statement.
