Mourinho warns United could finish outside the top 4

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has warned that his side may not finish in the top 4 of the Premier League this season, something that would almost certainly cause outrage among fans and the United board.

United finished 6th in last season’s Premier League campaign, but reaped the rewards of winning the Europa League and gaining Champions League football this term. However, the expectation level has risen through the roof this season, and Jose will be expected to mount a serious challenge for the Premier League title.

Despite United’s ruthless start to the season which sees them sitting joint top alongside rivals Manchester City, Mourinho says it is still possible for the Red Devils to end up outside the top 4 when the season comes to an end.

United are yet to face a side in the top half of the table so far this campaign, and Mourinho believes his side may not have been tested to their full potential yet.

Mourinho told Portuguese outlet Record: “Nothing happened yet. Last year the season started much harder and ended very well, this year it started very well and we don’t know how it will end.”

“In another league it could be said that a team that starts with seven wins and a draw would almost mean the title.”

“But in England it doesn’t mean anything, not even that we will finish in the first four places.”

United face their toughest test of the season so far after the international break, travelling to Anfield in order to face bitter rivals Liverpool, who will be desperate not to drop further points.
