Who Is Teden Mengi? A Profile Of The Young Centre Back Who Is Now Training With United’s First Team

Manchester United defender Teden Mengi has been pictured training with the first team ahead of the resumption of the Premier League season.

The centre-back has yet to make his senior debut but he has been putting in some very impressive performances for the youth teams over the past few seasons.

Mengi is a centre-back by trade, although he has been used as a left-back on a couple of occasions. He is already England Under 18 international and he is certainly one to watch.

Press the next page as we take a look at the 18-year-old’s career so far.

Mengi is a local lad who has come through the youth ranks

The defender is of Angolan descent but was born in Manchester. He was picked up by United’s academy at an early age and he has made it all the way up to the Under 23s.

Mengi is currently captain of the Under 18s, after previously captaining the Under 16s. He is also a regular for Neil Wood’s Under 23s, having played 15 Premier League 2 matches so far this campaign.

He has pace to burn

Centre-halves are not always known for their speed, but recent speed tests at United have shown that Mengi is one of the quickest players at the whole club.

With players providing data during their workouts amid the lockdown, the defender clocked the fourth-highest speed, only trailing the likes of Dan James, Jesse Lingard and Axel Tuanzebe.

Mengi has played against senior teams already and excelled

With United fielding their Under 21s in the EFL Trophy, it means the defender has faced senior opponents for the first time this season. He played the full 90 minutes against Lincoln City, Doncaster Rovers and Tranmere Rovers in the group stages of the competition.

Mengi showed he was up for the challenge as well, with the Red Devils securing two victories and suffering only one loss against Tranmere, in a 3-2 win defeat back in early December.

He has already made the bench for the first team

Mengi’s impressive performances in the EFL Trophy, as well as his displays at youth level, were rewarded when he was handed a place on the bench for the Europa League group stage game against FC Astana back in late November.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did not hand the teenager his senior debut, as he was an unused substitute in the 2-1 defeat, but he is on the cusp of making a first-team breakthrough.
