Who Is Joe Hugill? 4 Facts About The Teenage Sensation Who Rejected Arsenal And Spurs To Join United

Manchester United starlet Joe Hugill has been hitting the headlines in recent weeks after making his mark in the club’s academy.

The 17-year-old is already being tipped for his first-team debut following some standout performances at the Cliff since the beginning of the season.

Hugill’s rise to prominence has been rapid as he hasn’t been with the club that long but he has made a big impression on the club’s coaching staff.

So what do we know about the striker? Press the next page as we list four facts about the player.

1) He Was Signed From Sunderland

Hugill only moved to United in the summer after being developed in Sunderland’s academy. The Red Devils had to pay £300,000 to secure the striker’s services.

Arsenal and Tottenham were also interested in signing the 17-year-old but the forward opted to join United instead.

2) Hugill Scored Twice On His Debut

The teenager made an instant impact following his switch to Manchester, scoring a brace in the 2-1 win over Blackburn Rovers in an Under-18 Premier League North division game.

At 6ft 2, and with the expectation that he could grow even taller, he is able to lead the line and dominate opposing defenders, especially at Under 18 level.

3) He Was Promoted To The Under 23s Almost Straight Away

Due to his physical development, and excellent technical ability, United decided to promote Hugill to the Under 23s almost straight away, following that game against Blackburn.

The striker was handed a start by Under 23s head coach Neil Wood in the 5-3 defeat to Liverpool back in September. He has subsequently gone on to score 10 goals and provide two assists in 16 Premier League 2 appearances.

4) Hugill Impressed Solskjaer More Than a £37m Signing

One of the forward’s standout games for the Under 23s came in a 6-3 win over Liverpool at the end of last month, with the player scoring an incredible four goals.

It was also Amad Diallo’s first appearance following his £37m move from Atalanta, but when asked to assess the Ivorian’s display, first-team manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said he had been more impressed by Hugill:

“We’re gonna give him [Diallo] the time to settle in… If we go from that game [vs Liverpool], I’d pick Joe Hugill. Four goals by Hugill, he’s a top striker as well, we’re looking forward to seeing his development.”
