United’s Season Report Card: The 2 Players Who Have Impressed (And 3 That Haven’t)

Having lost three of their opening seven league games, Manchester United’s start to the campaign has been very disappointing.

Some pundits were tipping them to push the top two during preseason but those hopes have quickly faded as the team’s problems with consistency have continued.

Wins against Paris Saint-German, RB Leipzig and Everton have been overshadowed by defeats to the likes of Tottenham, Crystal Palace and Istanbul Basaksehir.

So which players have performed well or who has failed to impress this campaign? Press the next page, as we go through our report card for United’s season so far.

Bruno Fernandes

Sometimes, it looks as though the Portuguese ace has to do everything himself to get a result for United, considering the lack of support he is getting from other players in the squad.

Fernandes has had a few off games this campaign, as have United in general but, for the most part, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can trust him to come up with the goods when called upon.

Victor Lindelof

It’s not saying much, considering how poor defensively United have been this season, but the Swedish international has been the club’s best centre-back so far this campaign. He has particularly impressed over the last month or so.

The fact that Lindelof has also admitted that he is nursing a chronic back problem makes his performances recently even more impressive. Fans will be hoping he can get back to 100% very soon.

Paul Pogba

In contrast to Fernandes and Lindelof, the Frenchman hasn’t been anywhere near his best this season and his foul that gave away the penalty against Arsenal, in the 1-0 defeat earlier this month, kind of sums up his form at the moment.

The frustrating thing with Pogba is that we know he has the ability to perform, but no manager, since he returned in 2016. has managed to get it out of him on a regular basis. He may be in for a long spell on the bench unless he can improve on his recent performances.

Anthony Martial

Sent off against Tottenham and yet to score in the Premier League this season, you have to question whether the Frenchman is cut out to be United’s first-choice number nine.

Martial does score goals, as we saw last season (with his 23 in all competitions) but he can go missing in games and does not offer the movement you would expect in a top-class striker.

Harry Maguire

His issues over the summer were well documented, but his poor form this season can’t simply be excused by off the pitch issues. For a man who is supposed to be United’s captain, and an £80m player to boot, he has been nowhere near good enough.

Supporters will be very much hoping that Maguire’s performances pick up in the coming weeks and months.
