Manchester United are interested in signing Roma winger Justin Kluivert, according to reports in the Italian media.

The Netherlands international was a target for Arsenal earlier in the summer but the Gunners were put off by the 21-year-old’s €40m (£36m) asking price.

United will not be deterred by such a valuation and they could even use Chris Smalling as a bargaining chip in the deal if they are serious about making a move for Kluivert. The Red Devils have been linked with a number of different wingers in recent days, with negotiations over signing Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho having stalled somewhat.

Juventus’s Douglas Costa, Bayern Munich’s Kingsley Coman, Bournemouth’s David Brooks, Fiorentina’s Federico Chiesa, Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jnr and Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele have all been mentioned over the past couple of weeks.

Kluivert’s name, though, is a new one. There is no doubt that he would be a massive downgrade on someone like Sancho, having scored just seven goals in 31 appearances for Roma last season.
