Manchester United are one of “three major European clubs” who are tracking Monaco midfielder Youssouf Fofana, according to RMC Sport.

The French radio station report that the Red Devils are interested in the 24-year-old, along with Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain.

Fofana was also a target for Erik ten Hag’s side in the summer transfer window, having tabled a loan bid with an option to buy at the end of the season.

The proposal was rejected by Monaco and it appears as if United then moved on to secure the services of Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat instead.

Could Fofana be a replacement for Casemiro?

Having brought in Amrabat, you wouldn’t have thought that there would be a lot of room for another holding midfielder in the squad. However, there have been rumours that Casemiro could leave Old Trafford in January, with Saudi Arabia his likely destination.

In that context, a move for Fofana could well be considered. The Monaco star does have a good reputation, having been capped 13 times by his country, and he has also been linked with a move to other English teams.

Two other Premier League clubs have contemplated bids for Fofana

Liverpool and Chelsea are both known to have scouted the former Strasbourg player in the past, but neither are expected to get involved if United do make a move for him during the January transfer window.

It is believed that Juventus are the biggest threat, with RMC Sport claiming that the Serie A club have held meetings with Fofana’s representatives in recent weeks. Whether that will lead to a formal bid being lodged in the New Year, we shall have to wait and see.

The Frenchman is not expected to be that expensive, with his contract set to expire at the end of next season.
