United Determined To Beat Arsenal To Signature Of “Brilliant” Player Who Would Compete With Luke Shaw

Manchester United are expected to step up their interest in Girona left-back Miguel Gutierrez at the end of the season, according to The Sunday Mirror (via TEAMtalk).

Both the Red Devils and Arsenal have scouted the Spaniard extensively this campaign but it appears that the Manchester club are the team most likely to table a formal bid this summer.

Gutierrez has impressed for Girona this campaign, having played a key part as the La Liga side mounted an unlikely title challenge.

While his team have fallen off the pace somewhat in recent weeks, the fullback has continued to catch the eye with his performances.

Gutierrez has been described as a “brilliant” left-back by observers

The Athletic journalist Thom Harris praised the 22-year-old for his “brilliant” versatility back in December. Despite ostensibly being a left-back, the defender has been able to take up multiple positions across the pitch during games.

Gutierrez is equally capable when playing as a wingback or when asked to play in a much more defensive role. That adaptability has clearly attracted United and other Premier League clubs.

With Luke Shaw having suffered a lot of injury problems, and Tyrell Malacia having missed the whole campaign due to a knee injury, bringing in a player of Gutierrez’s quality does seem like a very good idea, as long as the price is right.

United will be concerned about a buyback clause

Girona are expected to demand a sizeable fee for Gutierrez but it should be noted that his previous club, Real Madrid, do have a buyback option on the player.

It is believed that if the Spanish league leaders table a bid of €8m (£6.8m), they can re-sign him this summer. At this point in time, there is no certainty that will happen but it is a distinct possibility considering his form in recent months.
