Journalist Confirms United Are Targeting Defender Who Chelsea Sold For £18M Two Years Ago

Manchester United are considering Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi as one of the “possible replacements” for Harry Maguire, according to the Daily Mail reporter Chris Wheeler.

The journalist claims the 23-year-old has been added to a four-man shortlist that also includes Bayern Munich’s Benjamin Pavard, Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo and Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba:

Guehi would likely be the most expensive of the options being looked at. Despite moving from Chelsea for £18m two summers ago, his value has skyrocketed since then.

Some reports have put his asking price at between £50m and £60m and, due to the fact that United may only receive £30m for Maguire, the Red Devils would have to stump up the rest of the cash from additional sales.

Ten Hag has yet to make his decision on Maguire’s replacement

At the time of writing, manager Erik ten Hag hasn’t made a firm decision on which of the four centre-backs he wants to sign.

Out of the four, Pavard would be the cheapest. He has less than a year left on his contract at Bayern and the Bundesliga champions may only demand €30m (£26m) for the player.

United’s other alternatives would cost more

Reports in the French media have suggested that Nice would want, at least, €40m (£34m) for Todibo, and Leverkusen’s valuation for Tapsoba is said to be closer to €50m (£43m).

Considering United are working within a tight transfer budget after shelling out around £175m this summer, you would have to say Pavard (rather than Todibo, Tapsoba or Guehi) is the likeliest target.
