FIVE Stats From Pre-Season That Show Why Dalot Should Start Ahead Of Wan-Bissaka Against Wolves

It’s been a positive pre-season for Manchester United right-back pairing Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Manager Erik ten Hag has shared out the minutes between the two players across the friendlies but the Dutchman now has a decision to make as to who will start against Wolves next Monday.

To make the choice easier, ten Hag may well be trawling through the stats in pre-season to see which of them made a better impression. If he does, he will discover that Dalot has excelled in a number of key areas.

1) Pass Accuracy

Dalot not only surpassed Wan-Bissaka in terms of total passes completed (91.79%) but he was also superior in terms of his accuracy when hitting forward passes (90.91%) and long passes (66.7%).

2) Crossing

The Portuguese international was more prolific in terms of delivering crosses into the box (1.91 per 90) and his accuracy (40%).

3) Dribbling

Getting up and down the flank is a key part of a right-back’s job in a team managed by ten Hag, who likes to get his fullbacks high up the pitch. Again, Dalot has looked impressive when asked to keep possession, averaging 2.67 dribbles per 90 in pre-season, whilst successfully keeping the ball 57% of the time.

4) Aerial Duels Won (%)

The defensive aspects of Dalot’s game have often been criticised by supporters, but there is no disputing the fact that the 24-year-old has improved in aerial challenges. It’s a small sample size but he did win 100% of his aerial duels in pre-season, compared to Wan-Bissaka’s 60%.

5) Offensive Duels Won (%)

The Portuguese defender has impressed in terms of his one-on-one defending as well. In an area where you would think that Wan-Bissaka would come out on top, Dalot won more duels (60%) than his teammate (38.89%) across the four matches that he played in.

Based on the evidence from the pre-season games, you would have to say that Dalot has made a good case for starting the first Premier League match of the season at Old Trafford next week.
