Romano Claims Player With £34M Release Clause Is “Really Appreciated” By United And He Would “Love” PL Move

Manchester United are still keeping tabs on Bayer Leverkusen wingback Jeremie Frimpong, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Speaking on the United Stand YouTube channel, Romano said that the Dutchman is being monitored by the Red Devils’ scouts and the player would be interested in a move to England at the end of the season:

“I can confirm that Frimpong is really appreciated by people in the scouting [department at United] and also that Frimpong would love to try an experience in the Premier League. He would really like to try this opportunity in the future.”

“Now, obviously, he’s focused on Bayer Leverkusen, it’s a dream season for them, but I think in the summer it’s a concrete chance for Frimpong to move to the Premier League.”

Frimpong has a release clause

In addition to United’s interest, Romano confirmed that the former Manchester City and Celtic player does have a €40m (£34m) release clause which can be triggered this summer.

Frimpong will be an extremely attractive target at that price, considering the campaign he is having. The 23-year-old has scored 8 goals and provided 10 assists in 27 appearances for Leverkusen.

Will United have competition for the defender?

Frimpong’s performances have also attracted the attention of other Premier League teams, with the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool having been mentioned as potential suitors over the past six months.

In terms of whether United will press ahead with a formal offer for the right-back, a lot depends on who the next sporting director is. INEOS are expected to appoint a replacement for John Murtough, and the new man in charge may decide to cool the club’s interest in Frimpong.

With Diogo Dalot in such good form, there is a good case for saying that transfer funds would be better devoted to strengthening other positions.
