Manchester United have held “concrete talks” with Bayer Leverkusen wingback Jeremie Frimpong, according to Bild journalist Christian Falk.
Writing in his Fact Files column, Falk said that the Red Devils are one of three clubs pursuing the Dutchman’s signature ahead of the summer transfer window:
“[Xabi] Alonso and sporting director [Simon] Rolfes are working on a shared future with Jeremie Frimpong. His contract [runs] until 2028 [and] also contains an exit clause. The wing player can go for €40m.”
“The clause would have to be activated before the start of the European Championship in June. Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Manchester United have registered their interest in the Dutchman. The management of Frimpong is already in concrete talks with United and Bayern.”
Frimpong has had an outstanding season for Leverkusen
The former Manchester City and Celtic player has played an integral role in his club’s unbeaten run that has put them on the cusp of winning the Bundesliga title.
Frimpong has racked up 12 goals and 11 assists in all competitions this campaign, with his team having also reached the German Cup final and the Europa League quarter-finals.
United will be very tempted by the player’s asking price
As Falk mentions, there is a release clause in Frimpong’s contract. €40m (£34m) in the current market is not a great deal of money; especially for a player who is still only 23 years of age.
There are some doubts over where he would fit into United’s starting eleven. He does thrive in a wingback role and, unless the Red Devils change to 5 at the back, Frimpong would probably have to line up in defence.
With Aaron Wan-Bissaka tipped to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season, Frimpong could well be seen as his replacement.
