Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has expressed his disgust at Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s contributions in the build-up to Brentford’s equaliser on Saturday night.

The fullback kept Ivan Toney onside for the initial run in behind the defence before proceeding to ball watch as the striker passed it to Kristoffer Ajer. Schmeichel was less than impressed with the defender’s lack of desire:

“When they scored, if you look at Wan-Bissaka on the Brentford goal This is what I mean by standards. Wan-Bissaka is out there to the left. The ball gets crossed, now look at him walking, he is walking, he is jogging and Ivan Toney would have been offside had he followed the back four line. Then that goal wouldn’t have happened.”

“These are the little things. That’s not Man United, that’s not pride or high standards – he has cost, not to blame him, but in that moment, because of what he didn’t do, simple things such as concentrating and they equalise.”

Wan-Bissaka was not the only player below par

While Schmeichel may have singled out the 26-year-old, it has to be said that nobody in a United shirt really did themselves justice at Gtech Community Stadium.

They were lucky to be leading the game before Ajer’s goal, and Brentford’s equaliser was more than just deserts. The Bees had 31 shots on goal during the 90 minutes.

Ten Hag’s frank admission about United’s performance

Manager Erik ten Hag admitted after the game that United’s opponents were the “better” team and his side “didn’t deserve to win”. It was a stark contrast to just a couple of weeks before when they had shown so much desire and quality to beat Liverpool in the FA Cup.

That lack of consistency has been the Red Devils’ main problem throughout the course of the campaign and it is why they are 11 points off the top 4 with 9 games to go.
