Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has confirmed that he has held conversations with Rasmus Hojlund about how he can adapt to the demands of the Premier League.

The Danish international has yet to score a domestic goal since his £72m transfer from Atalanta in the summer. Against Fulham last weekend, he failed to register a single shot, and he was visibly frustrated after he was substituted at Craven Cottage. Asked how the Red Devils are going to get more out of their No.9, ten Hag says it is a two-way process:

“As a team, we can be better in possession stuff, we can create more and better chances that will give our offensive players more opportunities to score goals. Social-wise, he integrates very good in the team and the club. From here on, he has to take it on and improve. That’s the character from Rasmus, he wants to improve every day. It’s lovely to work with him, such characters.”

“He understands but, of course, we speak with him about [adapting] because he’s still a young player but he’s smart and he understands the situation, so he’s aware of it. He wants to score goals and when he’s not he’s so keen to score the next game and he’s working very hard in training to get his progress in.”

Patience will be needed with Hojlund

Many United supporters will be looking at Erling Haaland’s goal record for Manchester City, and contrasting it to Hojlund’s, who is only 2 years younger.

However, it is not fair to compare the two. Hojlund is more of a late developer, and it may be a year or two before we see the very best of him in a United shirt. Of course, after spending so much money on him, fans will be hoping for an instant return but patience is required.

The striker will be keen to break his duck for United in the Premier League soon

Even though Hojlund has already scored 3 times in the Champions League, the Dane will be desperate to get his first league goal, having drawn a blank in his first 8 appearances.

United’s game against Luton Town at home this weekend could be the perfect opportunity to get on the scoresheet.
