Alan Shearer Points Finger At 2 United Players As He Explains Why Hojlund Has Still Not Scored PL Goal

BBC pundit Alan Shearer believes Manchester United forwards Antony and Alejandro Garnacho are making life “difficult” for Rasmus Hojlund.

The £72m summer signing from Atalanta has yet to get off the mark in the Premier League, but Shearer is very much of the belief that the Norwegian international has the potential to become a great striker as long as his teammates begin to play to his strengths:

“I think he [Hojlund] will come good. He has to improve his link-up play and finishing but I do have sympathy for him. I try to put myself in his position, I look at [Alejandro] Garnacho, a lot of the time he is running with his head down. He doesn’t pick his head up enough to see when the centre-forward is about to run.”

“On the other side is Antony. It would do my nut to play with him because you know 99.99 percent of the time he is coming inside onto that left foot. The defenders know, they can set themselves. On the odd occasion, if he did [go] on his right, it would make it a bit more difficult. But for a centre-forward, it doesn’t half make it difficult [for Hojlund].”

The front three have not gelled together

You only have to look at the numbers to see how ineffective United’s current front three have been in front of goal. They have scored just 1 between them in the Premier League so far this season.

Although Garnacho, in particular, has put in some good individual performances, they need to start gelling as a unit if they want to get the best out of each other.

Hojlund is feeling the pressure

The United forward had a great chance against Liverpool in the second half, when he was one-on-one with Alisson, but he hit his shot straight at the Reds no.1.

A more confident player would have been more composed in that position. Hojlund is clearly finding things hard but Shearer seems to think that, if he gets the right support, he will ultimately prove to be a success.
