Manchester United legend Paul Scholes says he is very concerned by Raphael Varane’s form after the defeat to Galatasaray on Tuesday evening
The Red Devils conceded 3 goals at home and Scholes believes Varane’s lethargic display played a major role in the team’s defensive woes:
“I worry about Varane a bit. I do think he’s been one of the very best defenders around, just like Rio [Ferdinand] was, in that same ilk at Real Madrid, but I just feel like his legs are looking a little bit sluggish. He’s can’t keep fit, I’d be worried about him.”
Not every fan on X agreed with Scholes’ assessment of Varane but many do feel that the Frenchman is not performing to the required level:
His very shaky, can’t even handle any pressure

The second goal was all him. Didn’t even close the player down

Why do you think Madrid got rid ?

Why are people defending Varane? Paul might be trolling or whatever but this is straight up facts, he does look very slow with ball and movement. We conceded 3 man. Ofcourse CBs will be blamed along with others.

Absolutely spot on. Our defence has turned out to be a nightmare.

Suspect we’ll need to replace both Varane and Casemiro for next season…. Big problems to solve!

Varane does have many miles in the legs
Scholes’ remarks about the centre-back being leggy do have some merit. Despite only being 30 years of age, Varane has made 454 appearances in his senior career.
On top of that, the Frenchman has had 21 separate injuries over the last decade, meaning he averages at least 2 every season. His body has been through the wringer during his time as a footballer.
There is every chance that the United star will recapture his form
It should be pointed out that Varane hasn’t become a bad player overnight. He is too good a player to stay in the doldrums, even if he may be a little worse for wear.
Manager Erik ten Hag will be hoping that he can rediscover his best form sooner rather than later.
