United Join City In Pursuing 6ft 5 Defensive Colossus As Ten Hag Considers January Reinforcements

Manchester United are weighing up a move for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite ahead of the January transfer window, according to the Daily Mail.

The 6ft 5 centre-back had already impressed scouts with his performances during a loan spell at PSV Eindhoven last season and they have kept tabs since then after he broke into the Toffees’ first team.

United are, however, not the only side scouting Branthwaite, with Manchester City also reportedly monitoring the 21-year-old’s development.

PSV would be keen on re-signing the centre-back on a permanent basis as well, but it’s likely that he will remain in the UK if he does leave Goodison Park.

United are looking to replace Maguire

Despite manager Erik ten Hag having five centre-backs at his disposal, the Mail claim that the Red Devils are “in the market” for another option in that position.

It is believed that United are anticipating the departure of Harry Maguire, who may look to leave Old Trafford for more game time.

Alternatives to Branthwaite are being considered

The England Under 21 international is currently locked in talks over a new contract with Everton and, if he does sign on the dotted line, there is a danger that United could be priced out of a move for the defender.

With that being the case, it appears that the Manchester club are drawing up contingency plans. Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo, who was linked with a switch to Old Trafford in the summer, is still being watched.

Benfica’s Antonio Silva is on the club’s radar too. Earlier this week, reports in the Portuguese media confirmed that the Red Devils are interested in the 19-year-old defender but his €120m (£104m) release clause may make it difficult to prise him away from his current team.
