Lawrenson Names Spurs Boss And Ex-Chelsea Head Coach As His Favourites To Replace Ten Hag In United Dugout

Ex-BBC pundit Mark Lawrenson says Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou and Bayern Munich head coach Thomas Thomas Tuchel should be in contention to succeed Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.

The Dutchman’s future has been called into question following the arrival of INEOS as minority shareholder. A former United player Gary Neville has suggested that Sir Jim Ratcliffe may have already decided on the manager’s fate, and asked for his thoughts by Paddy Power, Lawrenson said:

“I think the whispers are telling us that Erik ten Hag is going and I would’ve thought that somehow, Gary Neville would know exactly what’s happening. It sounds like someone is leaking all the stuff out which is what happens.”

“I’d like Ange Postecoglou to replace him – I wouldn’t because he would make them better which is not good for Liverpool. But when you look round and there’s the likes of Julian Nagelsmann but he’s at Germany so it can’t be him.”

“It’s a great time to get the job at Manchester United because you can’t do any worse than ten Hag, unlike Liverpool – it’s a terrible time to get that job. They could go for Thomas Tuchel; he knows the league and he speaks English. The boat is rocking now, and he might turn it round. I can’t think of anyone else.”

What are the bookmakers saying about ten Hag?

Paddy Power have the current United boss at 3/1 to be the next Premier League manager to leave his post so Lawrenson is right to say that the 54-year-old is coming under increasing pressure.

Many feel that INEOS will give ten Hag until the end of the campaign to turn things around. However, if he doesn’t qualify for the Champions League, questions will be asked. The club are currently 8 points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa.

Who is in the running to be the next United manager if ten Hag is sacked?

Postcogolou is not among the frontrunners to be ten Hag’s successor but Tuchel is one of the favourites, along with another former Chelsea coach Graham Potter.

Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim and Inter Milan’s Simone Inzaghi are also considered candidates.
