Lee Sharpe Names The England Star Who Would Have Been A “Better Signing” For United Than Mason Mount

Ex-Manchester United midfielder Lee Sharpe believes James Maddison would have been a “better signing” for his former club than Mason Mount.

Maddison joined Tottenham for £40m in the summer, but Sharpe told AGamble.com that the 26-year-old should have been snapped up by the Red Devils instead of his England international teammate:

“I think if we all had the gift of hindsight then we all would have said Maddison would have been a better signing.”

“The way the two have started this season, Maddison looks a far better investment than Mount does at the moment. But we’ll see where Tottenham end up and how Mount gets on for the rest of the season and judge it at the end of the season.”

Maddison has started the season like a house on fire

After performing well for Leicester, despite their relegation from the Premier League last campaign, many felt that Maddison would be a success if he did make the move to a ‘Big Six’ club.

Spurs were the team to take the plunge, and it seems like money well spent at the moment, with the midfielder having scored 2 goals and contributed 4 assists in only 7 league appearances.

Mount hasn’t fared so well at United

United spent an initial £55m to bring in the 24-year-old from Chelsea but he has struggled to make an impact at his new team so far. A hamstring injury has undoubtedly hindered his progress but his return of 0 goals and 1 assist in 5 games is rather disappointing,

As Sharpe says, we will be in a better position to judge the two transfers at the end of the season but, for the time being, it seems United have backed the wrong horse.
