Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo says he is keen on following “in the footsteps” of Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka and Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham following his call-up to the England squad.

Both Saka and Bellingham have managed to excel at international level despite their young age and, asked whether he is keen to emulate the pair, Mainoo replied:

“Yes, definitely, to follow in the footsteps of them. They have been amazing. They have come up and stayed up so quickly. They are both great players.”

Mainoo was a late call-up for England’s friendlies against Brazil and Belgium this week. He was originally named in the Under 21 squad before being promoted to the seniors.

Based on his form for United, many feel that Mainoo will be able to step up to the plate, like Saka and Bellingham, if he is handed his debut by manager Gareth Southgate.

Mainoo can still play for another country

Even if the teenager does play for England during the international break, it doesn’t rule out him playing for Ghana in the future.

Mainoo will only have to commit to one country as and when he is asked to play in a competitive fixture. Ghana’s football federation have already made their feelings clear about calling up the United star, but the player seems keen on sticking with the Three Lions for now.

The 18-year-old played for England at Under 17, Under 18, Under 19 and Under 21 level before his senior call-up.

United are keen to tie down the midfielder to a new contract

Mainoo did put pen to paper on a contract extension with the Red Devils in February last year, keeping him at Old Trafford until 2027, with an option for a further twelve months.

However, after establishing himself in the first team, the club are reportedly looking to reward him with an improved salary.
