Manchester United have entered “initial discussions” with Kobbie Mainoo over signing a new contract, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The midfielder has established himself as a regular starter in recent weeks and Romano says the Red Devils are keen to reward him with an improved deal which will include a higher salary:

Mainoo only put pen to paper on his current contract 12 months ago but the club are clearly keen for the player to commit his long-term future.

Southgate is the latest high-profile figure to praise Mainoo

Following his breakthrough season at Old Trafford, England manager Gareth Southgate has confirmed that the Three Lions are keeping close tabs on the 18-year-old’s progress. Speaking after the UEFA Nations League draw on Thursday, he said:

“He’s doing brilliantly. I’m not certain he’s necessarily going to be a defensive midfielder, as such. He’s quite a progressive player but he’s had a fabulous start to his career and it will be good to monitor him as we go forward.”

United star will have a decision to make on his international future

Southgate’s remarks come not long after Randy Abbey, a member of the executive council of the Ghana FA,  said the country will “definitely” look to persuade Mainoo into switching allegiance.

The teenager was born in Stockport, and he has played for England at youth level, but he does have Ghanaian heritage, so it will be up to him who he plays for.

At the moment, though, Mainoo will simply be focused on keeping his place in United’s starting lineup.
