Manchester United are very keen on snapping up RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano, according to reports in the French media.

The France Under 21 international has been identified by the Red Devils as a cheaper alternative to Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly, with the Bundesliga star potentially available for just €40m (£35m) this summer.

Upamecano does have a release clause of €60m (£52m) but with his contract expiring at the end of next season, Leipzig have admitted that he could be available for a lot less.

His availability means a number of teams are interested in the 21-year-old. Bayern Munich have been mentioned as a possible destination but United’s main threat will come from other Premier League teams.

Manchester City are said to be keen on Upamecano, along with Chelsea and Tottenham. Arsenal were also reportedly looking to sign the Frenchman but they don’t have the resources to finance the move. It is, therefore, set up for a fierce battle between a number of clubs when the transfer window reopens.
