Manchester United have contacted agent Miguel Pinho as they weigh up a possible move for Sporting Lisbon left-back Nuno Mendes, according to reports in the UK.

Pinho represents both Mendes and Bruno Fernandes so the Red Devils could have the edge over their rivals if they go after the fullback.

Mendes has been linked with Manchester City in recent days, while Arsenal and Liverpool have been mentioned as potential suitors over the past year.

The 18-year-old has a €70m (£60m) release clause but reports suggest that a deal worth £52m could be enough to secure the player’s services in the summer.

It would be a surprise if United shelled out a sizeable sum on Mendes, considering Luke Shaw’s excellent form, and the fact that they only signed Alex Telles from Porto at the start of the season.

Mendes is undoubtedly a very promising young player, though, so it is unsurprising that the club are keeping tabs on the defender.
