Two Pros And Three Cons To United Signing Ousmane Dembele

Manchester United are currently in talks with Barcelona about signing Ousmane Dembele on loan, according to multiple reports in the English media.

The 23-year-old is being eyed as a potential alternative to Jadon Sancho after talks stalled with Borussia Dortmund over the transfer fee for the England international.

United are believed to be in contact with Dembele’s agent in order to try and persuade the Frenchman into moving to Old Trafford before the transfer window shuts.

So, would Dembele be a good signing for the Red Devils? Press the next page as we go through the pros and cons of snapping up the winger.

CON – Injuries

Dembele’s injury problems are pretty well documented. He tore a tendon in his right hamstring last November and spent the rest of the season recovering his fitness.

The France international suffered a similar injury in his left hamstring two seasons before, meaning he has only played 75 games during his three years at the Camp Nou. United would, therefore, be taking a big risk in signing him considering his fitness record.

PRO – Unrivalled Speed

Manchester United’s frontline is designed to be lethal on the counter-attack, utilising the pace of its forwards to break down opposition defences. Dembele would be a perfect fit in that regard.

With the Frenchman on the right-hand side, Anthony Martial through the middle and Marcus Rashford playing off the left flank, the front three would rival any in Europe.

CON – Discipline

Dembele has been known to arrive late for training. Just this week, under new manager Ronald Koeman, it was reported that the winger had failed to clock in as instructed by the Dutchman an hour before the session started.

Combined with a love for partying, video games and reportedly refusing to improve his diet, there are a number of issues that manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would need to get a handle on.

PRO – A Loan Deal Carries Less Risk

Considering Dembele’s injury history, getting the 23-year-old on loan, rather than on a permanent deal which Barcelona reportedly want, would certainly be less risky for United.

A purchase option could be included just in case he stays fit and performs well, but it remains to be seen whether Barca would agree to such an arrangement.

CON – Lack Of Interest

Throughout the summer, reporters have insisted that Dembele has had no interest in leaving Barca. In fact, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has said that the winger turned down clubs such as Liverpool and Juventus.

Since then, the player’s stance is believed to have softened with some reports claiming he could be persuaded to move, but it hardly suggests that Dembele is desperate to play for United.
