TOP FIVE Goalkeepers Who Have Saved The Most Penalties In Premier League History

Saving a penalty is not something every goalkeeper is good at doing. Reading a striker’s run-up, going the right way, and getting a hand on the ball to keep the shot out requires the right mentality and agility.

The vast majority of spot-kicks do find the back of the net, but there are some keepers who are more adept at saving shots from twelve yards out than others.

It should be pointed that the best goalkeepers are not necessarily the best at saving penalties as you will find out as we go through our list.

Press the next page as we count down the five shot-stoppers who have saved the most penalties in the Premier League era.

5) Lukasz Fabianski (7 Penalties Saved)

The West Ham goalkeeper is now 36 years of age but he is still going strong in the Premier League, having kept the number one spot ahead of Alphonse Areola, who joined on loan from PSG in the summer.

Fabianski’s career is winding down, though, having recently retired from international football but strikers won’t be happy going up against him from the penalty spot.

4) Ben Foster (8 Penalties Saved in 370 PL Apps)

The former Manchester United player has played for various clubs in his career but most of his game time in the Premier League has been with West Brom and current club Watford.

Foster was actually second choice for the Hornets at the start of this season but he managed to regain his place after an injury to Daniel Bachmann.

3) Simon Mignolet (8 Penalties Saved In 245 PL Apps)

The Belgian initially came to prominence during a spell with Sunderland before being snapped up by Liverpool in 2013. He spent six years at Anfield, although his performances were continually questioned.

Mignolet was, however, an expert at saving penalties and no Premier League forward relished the prospect of going up against him from 12 yards out. He is currently playing back in his native Belgium for Club Brugge.

2) Rob Green (9 Penalties Saved In 267 PL Apps)

The former England international was pretty handy when facing penalties during his time in goal at three Premier League clubs: Norwich City, West Ham and Queens Park Rangers.

Many felt that Green never quite reached his potential as a keeper, and he ended up becoming a reserve for the likes of Huddersfield and Chelsea in his final few years as a professional footballer.

1) Heurelho Gomes (9 Penalties Saved In 195 PL Apps)

The Brazilian was an imposing presence in goal and he used it to great effect during his time in England when saving penalties from opposing strikers.

Gomes did initially struggle after arriving in England, spending a few years as Spurs’s number one before being loaned out to Hoffenheim. He did, however, establish himself at Watford, where he spent six fruitful years. He is actually still playing at the age of 40 back in Brazil.
