The Premier League’s Top 5 Best Ever German Players

After going through our top five Frenchman to play in the Premier League last week, we are now going to look at the best players from Germany who have lit up English football over the last thirty years.

United never really had any players from the country who you could argue deserve a place on this list, but there are certainly plenty of other names to consider.

We have left a few players off, such as Jens Lehmann and Robert Huth, who could have been selected but we feel the stars we have picked warrant their inclusion.

Press the next page as we go through our top five German players of the Premier League era.

5) Mesut Ozil

A controversial pick but the Arsenal playmaker has scored 44 goals and contributed an impressive 77 assists in his 254 appearances for the Gunners.

With those type of numbers, it would be hard to leave Ozil off this list, but his poor form over the past two years means we have decided not to put him any higher up.

4) Leroy Sane

The winger may have only spent four short seasons in England, after having recently left to join Bayern Munich, but his performances for Manchester City were nothing short of electrifying.

Sane played as a conventional winger, which is unusual these days, using his speed and strong left-foot to provide width and stretch opposition defences. He ended his time at City with 39 and 44 assists in 135 games.

3) Michael Ballack

The German international had won the league four times with Bayern Munich before Chelsea managed to snap him up on a free transfer in 2006.

There were question marks over how Ballack and Frank Lampard could play in the same team but it turned out not to be a problem with the midfielder playing 167 games over a four year period. His experience helped guide the Blues to a Champions League final in 2008, as well as the league and cup double in 2010.

2) Dietmar Hamann

The German played for three English teams in Newcastle, Liverpool and Manchester City but it was his time on Merseyside where he had the most success, playing in the holding midfield role.

Hamann won a treble of cups in 2001 under Gerard Houllier, as well as winning the Champions League in 2005. He is credited as one of the key players in turning round the 3-0 deficit against AC Milan after coming on at half-time in Istanbul. He won nine major trophies during his seven seasons at the Reds.

1) Jurgen Klinsmann

The German striker may have only spent a brief spell in England but his first season at Tottenham was a very memorable one. He was much criticised by elements of the English press before his move but he had become one of the league’s most popular players by the time he left in 1995.

Klinsmann scored 21 league goals and was the Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year in his first year with Spurs. He would later return on loan to help the London club stave off relegation in 1998, cementing his place as a club legend.
