The Five Most Wasteful Teams In The Premier League So Far This Season

Manchester United have actually scored 5.2 more goals than their xG number so far this season, which suggests that the Red Devils have been extremely efficient in front of goal in their first four league matches.

Part of that is down to having quality finishers such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes but there is arguably a little bit of luck involved as well, which may even itself out over the course of the season.

At the other end of the scale, there are some clubs that have been very wasteful in their shooting during the opening weeks of the campaign.

Press the next page as we name the five most wasteful teams in the Premier League (based on data from FBRef).

5) Liverpool (Goals – xG = -2.7)

The Reds have actually scored nine goals and unleashed 100 shots on the opposition goal this season, which is the most of all 20 teams in the top flight.

However, they have still been pretty profligate in front of goal. One of the worst perpetrators is Sadio Mane who has scored 1.9 fewer goals than he was expected to based on his xG (the worst score in the league).

4) Norwich (Goals – xG = -2.7)

Considering the Canaries have been thumped by Manchester City, as well as conceding three at home to Liverpool, it is surprising that they have managed to accumulate a number of goalscoring opportunities.

Poor finishing appears to have let Norwich down. That will have to improve through the course of the campaign if they want to stay up.

3) Southampton (Goals – xG = -2.9)

The Saints lost Danny Ings to Aston Villa this summer, so it seems their ability to convert chances into goals has taken a sizeable hit as a result of the transfer.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side have only scored three times but the xG total suggests they should have, at least, double that total. Having drawn three of their four matches, it looks like it is costing them points too.

2) Arsenal (Goals – xG = -4.0)

The fact that the Gunners have only scored once this campaign means they were always likely to feature highly on this list. Mikel Arteta’s side are not exactly producing loads of scoring opportunities but they are missing the ones they have created.

Considering Arsenal’s poor start to the season, it is an issue that will have to be rectified quickly or Arteta could well find himself out of a job.

1) Wolves (Goals – xG = -5.3)

If you have seen Bruno Lage’s side play this campaign, you wouldn’t have to look at the numbers to know they have been extremely wasteful in front of goal.

They finally managed to score their first two league goals of the season against Watford in the 2-0 win last weekend, but their forwards’ finishing has been very poor when they have been presented with good chances to score.
