Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick says the club can rebuild their squad within “two to three” transfer windows if they make the right decisions on player recruitment.
Rangnick cited the example of Liverpool, who he said managed to become “competitive” in the Premier League within a short space of time:
“Liverpool only needed two or three transfers until they had a competitive team. If you know what you’re looking for, it doesn’t have to take four or five years. They did it, when Jurgen came they finished eighth.”
Supporters on Twitter have interpreted Rangnick’s comments as meaning that the club must spend big this summer if they are to turn the club’s fortunes around quickly:

Bruh… he’s definitely telling Glazers to spend big from this summer for 1.5 to 2 yrs.. that’s a complete rebuild and we want a trophy and a competitive team…some were saying we needed 5yrs🤡

It’s a shame we had Ole who bought players like Maguire and AWB who don’t fit a proper system. Just a waste of money and time.

I would assume that Erik does, he wouldn’t take the job if he didn’t. Back him, back him with time and money. We can get this right. It’s not rocket science. A way of playing, and the players for it. Come on!! #MUFC

Rangnick is spot on. Man Utd don’t have a clear policy and it has shown with the signings they’ve made over the past 2-3 years.
Liverpool sign players for their system. Man Utd sign players based on the player’s individual abilities.

Rangnick is really being very vocal in terms of what he wants to see happening at United. The German is keen on having a recruitment process that identifies transfer targets for the manager, who can use them to implement his philosophy. It’s not all about big names (i.e West Ham’s Declan Rice and Tottenham’s Harry Kane), it’s about forging your own identity. Whether his views will be heeded by those higher up at the club, we shall have to wait and see.
