Romano Issues Transfer Update As United Weigh Up £103M Swoop For “Fantastic Player” The Club “Love”

Manchester United are unlikely to make a move for Benfica midfielder Joao Neves this summer, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Speaking on the United Stand YouTube channel, Romano confirmed that the 19-year-old is a player that the club “love” but the cost of the deal may stop a transfer from happening:

“A player like Joao Neves of Benfica. He’s a player they love because they’ve been scouting him for months. They believe he’s going to be a fantastic player in the future.”

“It is a really expensive one so I’m not sure Manchester United will have the kind of budget to go there, pay the clause and sign the player from Benfica. It’s going to be really complicated, especially if you have to cover three more positions [for signings] with Financial Fair Play issues.”

How much would Neves cost?

It is believed that there is a €120m (£103m) release clause in the Portuguese international’s contract and Benfica are not thought to be willing to let him leave the Estadio da Luz for less than that figure. One of the main reasons for that is down to competition from other teams.

The likes of Chelsea and Liverpool have also been mentioned as potential suitors for Neves in recent months. Combined with the need to stay within FFP guidelines, United may have to consider cheaper alternatives.

United’s captain has been singing the player’s praises

Speaking about the rumours linking Neves with a move to Old Trafford last month, Bruno Fernandes said that the teenager is already capable of playing at the highest level despite his age:

“I don’t know if United rumours are true, but I know he is ready for that big jump. He is an excellent player, he’s with the national team… that’s also why the big clubs are after him.”
