Rio Ferdinand Names Five Transfer Targets United Should Be Considering: We Take A Look At Each One

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has named five players that he thinks should be considered as transfer targets for the club this summer.

The club legend has gone with three central midfielders and two centre-backs he would like to see move to Old Trafford when the transfer window reopens.

Ferdinand has not mentioned any wingers or attacking midfielders in his selection which may surprise some people.

Press the next page as we go through each of his recommended targets one by one.

Thomas Partey

An all-action midfielder, the Ghanaian was seriously impressive when Atletico Madrid triumphed over Liverpool at Anfield in the Champions League last month.

Partey reportedly has a €50m (£43.5m) release clause which has attracted a number of clubs, including Arsenal, and United will need to make their move fast if they want to snap up the 26-year-old.

Wilfried Ndidi

The Nigerian international has spoken out in recent days that he is happy to remain at the King Power Stadium, but the holding midfielder would certainly add dynamism to the Red Devils’ midfield if he made the switch to Old Trafford.

United may have the likes of Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic who can play defensive roles, but Ndidi’s speed and ability to break down opposition attacks could be a valuable asset.

Saul Niguez

Ferdinand has consistently raved about the ability of the Spanish midfield maestro but it must be said that he would be a very costly purchase for United.

Atletico are said to be unwilling to sell the 25-year-old for below his release clause, which stands at a staggering €150m (£131m); a figure which may put off the Red Devils.

Kalidou Koulibaly

The Napoli star is likely to leave the Serie A side this summer, and Ferdinand believes that United could do with a centre-back of his calibre. However, his age and price may stop a move from happening.

Koulibaly will be 29 soon, and reports suggest United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is content with the centre-backs currently in his squad, so spending €100m (£87m) on another one is unlikely.

Ben Godfrey

The final name mentioned by Ferdinand is an intriguing one. The Norwich defender is widely regarded as one of the best young English centre-backs in the country.

With the Canaries expected to sell a number of players if they go down, a move for Godfrey could well be considered if he becomes available.
