REPORT: Manchester United Set To Release Defensive Duo

Manchester United will let go of three contracted players in the summer – among them are promising centre-half Axel Tuanzebe and the perpetually injured Phil Jones [via Manchester Evening News].

The other player who will be released in the summer is 22-year-old Ethan Galbraith. He has been out on loan at Salford City this season – previously, he also enjoyed a fruit spell on loan at Doncaster Rovers.

Phil Jones has been at Manchester United since 2011, when he joined from Blackburn Rovers. Since then, Jones has gone on to make 204 appearances in the Premier League for the Red Devils – however, he has only played in four league games over the past three years.

Some may feel that the decision to let go of Tuanzebe is both preemptive and harsh – at just 25, he still has some developing to do. Nevertheless, he will be released at the season’s conclusion, having not featured in the Premier League for United since the 2020/21 season.

Tuanzebe has had a tough year out on loan at Stoke City. He has made just four appearances in the Championship this season due to long-standing injuries. It is difficult to see him giving serious competition to the likes of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez given his current form.
