Manchester United legend Paul Scholes says the Red Devils must sign a right-back and striker in the summer transfer window.
After witnessing his former club’s astonishing 7-0 defeat to Liverpool at the weekend, Scholes said he believes manager Erik ten Hag needs at least two additions to help the team compete in these high-profile fixtures:
“I think there are a couple of players in that team that when it comes to big games like this I don’t think they’re quite at the level. I think the right-back position could be a problem. They clearly need a centre-forward if [Anthony] Martial’s going to have the injury record he’s got.”
Wout Weghorst certainly looked out of his depth at Anfield. The Dutchman has been a good team player since arriving during the January transfer window, but he lacks the quality in front of goal to be a forward at the top level.
Tottenham’s Harry Kane and Napoli’s Victor Osimhen are thought to be on the radar as potential targets so recruiting a new number nine is certainly something that is being worked on.
The right-back position is also an area that will need addressing. While Diogo Dalot was very poor against Liverpool, he is unlikely to leave Old Trafford. His teammate Aaron Wan-Bissaka is the player who is expected to depart instead.
A couple of replacements (Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong and Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries) have been suggested but we shall have to wait and see who they end up pursuing.
