Paul Scholes: Mourinho is embarrassing Manchester United

Paul Scholes says Jose Mourinho is ‘embarrassing Manchester United’ and that he is lucky to remain in the job.

United slumped to another poor result last night in the Champions League as they were held 0-0 by Valencia at Old Trafford.

The draw means United have now failed to win in four games, having being held by Wolves two weekends ago before defeats to Derby County and West Ham United.

And Mourinho’s continued criticism of his players, especially Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial, throughout what has been a difficult period has led to intense speculation that the Portuguese boss has lost the dressing room.

Mourinho again criticised his side after last night’s draw, saying his defenders “lack technical quality”, and Scholes says he is surprised things have been allowed to become as bad as they are, insisting he should have been sacked following the 3-1 defeat to West Ham.

Speaking to BT Sport in the build-up to the Valencia game, Scholes said: “I’m actually sat here surprised he (Mourinho) survived after Saturday the performance was that bad.

“He’s coming out in press conferences, he’s constantly having a go at players, he’s having a go at people above him because he’s not getting what he wants and I think his mouth is probably out of control and I think he’s embarrassing the club.”

Mourinho responded by declaring he had no interest in what Scholes had to say: “I don’t need to know what he said. He said what he wants to say, I’m not interested, honestly, I’m not interested.

“Freedom of speech, free country, you can say what you want.”

United next take on Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon.
