Paul Merson Predicts The Result As United Face Tottenham

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson is expecting a stalemate when Manchester United take on Tottenham this evening.

Writing in his column for Sportskeeda, Merson said he was not impressed with Erik ten Hag’s side against Wolves in the season opener but, even though they are not playing well, he can still see them getting something from the game tonight:

“If Manchester United play like they did last week, they won’t win. But that’s the thing about United; they are often not at their best and still manage to win. They’ll be a lot more solid this weekend against Spurs than they were against Wolves.”

Merson has gone with a 2-2 scoreline, which seems like a pretty fair prediction, based on how the two teams performed in their opening fixtures.

United could have conceded a couple of goals against Wolves, and ten Hag will need to address how open they were in midfield if they are to secure a result versus Spurs.

If Ange Postecoglou’s side get the chances that United’s opponents had on Monday then the Red Devils may find themselves in a lot of trouble at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

United could have some joy of their own going forward

Spurs are not exactly watertight themselves, though, and their 2-2 draw at Brentford in their first league fixture shows that they can be got at defensively.

With that in mind, you would hope that the likes of Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes, in particular, are able to make the most of the openings that will likely come their way during the 90 minutes.

It could be an exciting game for the neutrals to watch, but United will be looking to improve defensively and begin the campaign with a notable result away from home, after having struggled on the road against the ‘Big Six’ last year.
