Manchester United were very poor despite securing a 1-0 win against Wolves on the opening day and manager Erik ten Hag will be hoping for a much-improved performance versus Tottenham this weekend.

Spurs drew their first competitive game under the management of Ange Postecoglou, and the Australian’s style of play does mean it could be quite an open game on Saturday evening.

In terms of United’s starting lineup, Andre Onana will be in goal. The Cameroon international had a solid debut but he was lucky not to give away a late penalty for a challenge on striker Sasa Kalajdzic.

Ten Hag may be forced into a change at the back. Lisandro Martinez was substituted at halftime against Wolves after picking up an ankle problem, so Victor Lindelof could step in to partner Raphael Varane in the centre of defence if the Argentine can’t prove his fitness.

After performing well in the season opener, Aaron Wan-Bissaka is likely to keep his place ahead of Diogo Dalot at right-back, with Luke Shaw lining up on the other flank.

United can’t afford to be so open in midfield as they were last time out. Wolves had huge spaces to run into on the counter-attack and you would back Tottenham to be more ruthless if they are afforded the same time on the ball this weekend. For that reason, ten Hag may have to consider dropping new signing Mason Mount, with Christian Eriksen taking his place alongside captain Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro.

Up front, despite flattering to deceive on Monday night, Marcus Rashford is expected to lead the line, with Antony on the right wing. There could be a change on the left flank, though, with Jadon Sancho replacing the disappointing Alejandro Garnacho.
