Murphy Names United, Liverpool And Arsenal Stars As His Top 3 Centre Backs In The Premier League

Danny Murphy has listed Manchester United defender Raphael Varane among the best centre-backs in the Premier League.

The former Liverpool midfielder thinks Virgil van Dijk is still right up there, despite the Dutchman’s struggles this season, but he also recognised the talent of Varane and his fellow countryman, Arsenal’s William Saliba:

“Reports of Virgil van Dijk’s demise were always greatly exaggerated. He remains the best centre-half in the Premier League alongside Raphael Varane, with William Saliba at Arsenal looking like the next one to take over.”

Varane has played a key role in improving United’s fortunes, along with Casemiro, this season. The World Cup winner has been a stalwart at the back, having formed a strong partnership with Lisandro Martinez.

Injuries curtailed his first campaign with the Red Devils but he has only missed seven matches due to fitness problems since August, having made 27 starts in all competitions (ahead of the Liverpool fixture on Sunday).

At 29 years of age, Varane is very much in his prime, and he will be vital for manager Erik ten Hag if United are to become title challengers in upcoming seasons.
