Although Edinson Cavani got a lot of the headlines after Manchester United’s 3-2 defeat to Roma last night, the performance of David De Gea also deserves to be highlighted.
The home side battered United’s goal for much of the first half and De Gea was on hand to make a number of impressive saves to ensure there could be no second-leg comeback.
When asked for their man of the match after the game, a large number of United supporters on Twitter opted to pick De Gea:
DDG was monumental. Hes still a top GK

100% De Gea, without him it could have easily been 8-8 on aggregate.

De Gea did all the job. We were 6-2 and if it wasn’t for him, don’t know how this match would have finished….

It’s clear that the Spaniard has upped his game since losing his place to Dean Henderson for Premier League matches, but it remains to be seen whether he can convince manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to make him the undisputed number one again.
A number of reports have suggested that De Gea could well be sold when the summer transfer window opens, but last night’s performance may make some at Old Trafford reconsider.
