Matic plays down title talk

Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic has played down early talk of his side winning the Premier League title, saying that there is still a long way to go in the race.

United have had a brilliant start to the season on every front – winning all but one of their Premier League games, as well as winning their first two Champions League fixtures comfortably. But this success has been shared by rivals Manchester City who sit above United in the table on goal difference.

It has been an impressive campaign so far in the league for Mourinho’s men, scoring 21 goals and conceding only 2, but Matic admits that a lot can change over the course of the season despite being in a good position at the moment.

“It’s hard to say because this is the beginning of the season.” Matic said.

“But we are in a good position. The most important thing is to collect the points, not concede the goals, because this is good for our confidence.”

“It’s too early to say something is favourite to win the league, but for sure there is five or six teams who are going to compete this year.”

“We know what we have to do because we are Manchester United and we are focused just on the next game.”

“Always the next game is the most important, so game by game we have to collect points and in next May we will see. It’s a long way to go.”

Matic’s midfield partner Paul Pogba has been out for over three weeks with a hamstring injury, with more time set to follow. But Matic is confident in his team, saying they have strength in depth to cover for the Frenchman.

“We know that he will be out for some time. He’s very important for us, he’s a great player, but I am sure that he will be ready soon,” he added.

“But we also have great players to play instead of him. We showed in the last few games that everyone is ready to play and everyone can help us.”
