REPORT: Manchester United Looking To Sign Veteran Goalkeeper

Manchester United have been linked with a move for veteran goalkeeper Yann Sommer, who currently plays for Bayern Munich, in the summer transfer window of 2023 [via TalkSPORT].

Bayern Munich are reportedly unwilling to give Sommer a guaranteed place in the first team – as such, the Swiss goalkeeper is looking to pursue a transfer move elsewhere.

United are also interested in Inter Milan’s Andre Onana and Everton’s Jordan Pickford, but could snap up Sommer instead, as he will be a cheaper option than the other two names mentioned.

Who else, besides Manchester United, is interested in Yann Sommer?

As things stand, United appear to be the only club who are linked with a move for Sommer in the upcoming summer window. Inter Milan had registered an interest in his services back in January, but nothing has surfaced since then.

As such, all United need to do is agree terms with both Bayern Munich and the player to secure a summer move for the Swiss shot-stopper.

Would Yann Sommer be Manchester United’s first-choice goalkeeper?

At this stage, it is difficult to say. Contract talks are ongoing between United and David De Gea – it looks increasingly unlikely that the Spaniard will remain at Old Trafford after the conclusion of the summer transfer window.

Should De Gea depart Manchester, the Red Devils would need a new first-team ‘keeper. Sommer, for all his talents, feels like something of a downgrade over De Gea.

Despite this, he is still a very capable shot-stopper with few weaknesses in his game. He is a capable shot-stopper and he also provides a commanding presence in the penalty area – he’s also great at saving penalties. His main drawback at this stage in his career is his age – in December, Sommer will turn 35 years of age.

Additionally, with him turning down a new deal at Bayern Munich unless he is guaranteed first-team football, it seems unlikely that he would be willing to swap Bayern’s bench for Manchester United’s.

As such, if he is brought on board, he will probably take the number one shirt. But would he be an upgrade over David De Gea or a sideways move?
