United Consider Hijacking Chelsea’s £50M Move For Player Who Has Been Praised By Guardiola As “Exceptional”

Manchester United are targeting Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana, according to reports in the English media.

Chelsea are also believed to be interested in the Cameroon international but the Red Devils could well rival the Blues for the 27-year-old’s signature.

While United are keen to tie down current number one David De Gea to a new contract, manager Erik ten Hag is reportedly looking to provide some competition for the Spaniard.

Onana won’t be available on the cheap, though, with it being claimed that Inter will hold out for at least £50m to sell the shot-stopper this summer.

Pep Guardiola is a fan

Following Manchester City’s Champions League final win over Inter last weekend, manager Pep Guardiola singled out Onana, complimenting him on his footwork:

“Normally, teams have great keepers, but he [Onana] is exceptional with his feet. When you have a goalkeeper like Onana who can read perfectly where everyone is to pass to, with Calhanoglu and Barella, then the strikers hold it up and move the ball around. It is very, very difficult. It would be a tiny bit easier without this goalkeeper, but still very tough.”

It’s high praise indeed, so it is not a surprise that teams like United, who are keen to play out from the back, are weighing up bids for the keeper.

Ten Hag has worked with Onana before

It should also be pointed out that manager Erik ten Hag already knows the player very well after having managed him at Ajax for a number of years.

Onana had already spent a year as the Dutch club’s number one before ten Hag’s appointment at the Johan Cruyff Arena in 2017, and he kept the gloves for the five seasons they were together. For that reason, you cannot rule out the two of them being reunited at Old Trafford.
