Man United closing in on prime-target but where does he fit in?

Manchester United have made big moves in the transfer market by securing deals for Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku but Jose Mourinho’s summer business is not done, as he seeks further additions to help his side challenge for the Premier League title and enjoy success in their return to the Champions League.

United’s additions so far bolster the squad in key areas, with Lindelof set to partner Eric Bailly in defence whilst Lukaku leads the line, but further additions for the Red Devils could lead to major changes within the squad- potentially seeing some big names dropped.

It seems the next player through the door at Old Trafford will be Inter Milan’s Ivan Perisic, as Sky Sports report the Red Devils are close to agreeing a fee with Inter Milan for the transfer of the Croatian winger.

Inter reportedly want as much as £48m for Perisic’s services, whilst they’ve also expressed an interest in Anthony Martial being included in a deal in some capacity, and a transfer of the winger may well lead to an uncertain future for French ace Martial.

Having signed the French international from Monaco in 2015 for a fee of £36m, Martial has struggled for consistency and was regularly omitted from Jose Mourinho’s line-up last season, which led to numerous reports indicating he could leave this summer.

Manchester United would prefer to keep Martial at the club but the arrival of Perisic puts the Red Devils in a very difficult position, as it’s practically impossible to include Martial, Perisic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford in the same line-up.

The Red Devils’ first-choice front three would likely see Perisic on the left and Lukaku playing centrally, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan completing an attacking trio, but that could be problematic for Rashford, Martial and Jesse Lingard- all of whom will have aspirations of featuring in the World Cup next summer.

It would also likely lead to further criticism on Jose Mourinho’s development of youth players but he showed a willingness to rotate last season, which mean both Martial and Rashford should continue to get opportunities- although it would perhaps not be in the areas they would like.

Manchester United’s move for Perisic would certainly raise eyebrows but looking between the lines shows it would be an impressive transfer, as Perisic boasted 11 goals and six assists in the Serie A last season- numbers which should ease the burden on Lukaku, as United will want to reduce their dependance on their main striker next season.
