Legendary England Captain And One Of The Game’s Best Finishers Has Advice For Rashford

After the clashing of heads between Romelu Lukaku and the opposing Southampton defender early in the 1st half in the game between United and the Saints, it was necessary for Jose to replace the big Belgian with young striker Marcus Rashford as Ibrahimovic is nursing a knee problem.

With Zlatan out for a month and Lukaku needs at least a week to recover and likely more and then suddenly you have a shortage of strikers.

United play away to Everton in their next game with Derby County to follow in the FA Cup.

Speaking as a pundit on BBC Match of the Day, Shearer who has bagged just a few goals in his career thinks Rashford needs to work on parts of his game saying,

“He’s an outstanding talent with great potential, but I’ve got sympathy with him because he’s got to learn the hard way in the centre-forward role,”

“He’s had to play left, he’s had to play right, down the middle, coming off and on as a substitute and it is difficult that way, but his movement has to be a little bit better.”

Shearer then analysed the performance of the young England star saying, “You have to take a step forward there to go back or step back to go forward; that’s what you have to do,

“(But there’s) no movement at all again. And this is not a criticism of him at all, I’m only giving him a little bit of advice that I hope he can take on because you have to be prepared to gamble in the box.

“When these balls are coming into the box, you’ve got to gamble and you’ve got to be a split second quicker than the defender, but by the time he realises, he’s a split second too late.

“As I said, I have got sympathy for him and I do think he will be a very, very good player. But he has to learn quickly.”

Well it seems the former Newcastle United and Southampton player has a lot of criticisms of the still young Rashford.

Let’s not forget Rashford burst onto the scene when LVG threw him in there in the 2015-16 season and he responded with goals and perfomances of a much more experienced player. This season Rashford has 9 goals in 31 appearances in all competitions which is ok but could do with improving and he will get the chance along with Anthony Martial to play in the centre-forward position while Lukaku and Zlatan are sidelined which is hopefully not too long.
